The filaments could however not be gas at all, but electrified plasma, according to the "electric universe" hypothesis. It's just an interesting theory, of course.

Here's a movie documentary worth watching which I saw recently about this interesting theory which can be backed up by some facts as it seems:

These phenomena are based in plasma science and not gas kinetics, gravity, or particle physics. Astrophysicists see magnetic fields but not the underlying electricity, so they are at a loss to explain them.

On another thought, I remember someone somewhere compared the universe (the physical that we "see") to a gigantic brain with the galaxies being neurons and so the connections we have now as (gas or plasma) filaments could be the axons and dendrites. Interesting association for sure.
