View Full Version : What does "Moderated Blog Entry" mean?

Every time I post a blog entry on AD a little man with a crossed-out mouth appears on it. On hovering my mouse pointer over it it says "Moderated Blog Entry", even if I have not enabled moderating comments when I posted the entry.

Does this mean a blog entry needs moderator approval before being visible on the site?

To be honest, since the last update (not done by us, Vbulletin service does it) a few things have changed- there are now new smilies none of us put up (and some old one disappeared) and this 'moderated' thing came up. I think we have to approve them now until one of us figures out how to change that.
In the past few days we have noticed spam in the blogs that we didn't notice until we 'went' there, and I recommend for people to disable blog comments to avoid spam turning up in them- which we naturally take care of when we become aware of it.
Idk if this is a 'default' thing that happens when they get updated- but as soon as we figure out what happened we will take care of this.
I heard that now the blogs are not visible to others, but I haven't been able to verify if this is true, since my default is to see everything.

The only blog entries I see since July are my own and those made by mods. So, I'm pretty sure I cannot see blogs written by others, as I've been asked to check out one and it's not there. Only those made by mods or those before the updates.

That's something we need to look into- one poster complained about it but it seems that it's happening to pretty much everyone else.

Ok the plot thickens. I took a look in the back end and found the following blog default settings:
View blog and leave comments is 'on' as default.
Members on ignore list may not view blog or leave comments.
Other members may view blog and leave comments
Guests may view blogs but not leave comments.

So, I'm not sure what the deal with the moderated message means, will have to try to look at yours and see if I figure it out- but in theory the blogs should be open to members that are logged in, but not to guests- a guest can see them but not comment on them (to avoid spam), but all members have to be logged in to comment if each blog is set to accept comments.
Please check on your own personal settings and make sure that your blog is set on 'visible to members' and I don't know why you can't see others, unless you're on their 'ignore' list- I don't think so, I'm not ignoring you so you should see mine (but not comment, I removed that option from mine.)

Er... according to the blogs I can see, you have none. I see four pages of blog entries, and they are by Jake, LightBeam, CPW, Missingno., Beekeeper and heliac. The latest blog I see from another user is Beek's from July 4th. And that's it.

Am I on your ignore list?

My "Permissions & Privacy" says that "Other members may..." view my blog and leave comments. Even guests should be able to view it. Only the boxes for ignored ones have been unchecked by default. (So it is the same defaults as you described, I haven't changed these.) But if these are the defaults they aren't working.

PS - my blog statistics:

1 visitor on Sep 3rd (when I PMd Beek if she can see my blog) and 1 today (that would be you).

Not exactly popular. :( :?

Of course I blame the technology, not the content! :P

Well if no one can see your blog then I suppose that's why you don't have visitors. I need to take this up with Robert and/ or the vBulletin gee...technicians, because this is beyond my abilities.

In working with the recent blog debacle, I found that for some reason if I go through all moderated blog posts and approve them, they seem to appear visibly.
I have now approve all blog posts by everyone I could (there were about 16)- so in theory all your blogs should be back, unless someone is in your 'ignore' list. Then all bets are off.

If after this you still can't see your blogs from a member please tell me which post isn't there and I'll take a look- but it appears that for some reason the blogs are set to 'moderate', which means a mod or admin has to approve them. I don't mind doing this (because it keeps spam away) if I know I have to, I'll make it part of my daily 'chores' here.

BTW, I could not find anywhere where it's set that way, I just found out experimentally that if I select your blog and approve it it appears to come back.

Yes, Thanks CFT :toast:

I can see all the blogs now, there are lots, haven't read them all yet though...

U could probably do without the 'extra chores' though....?

It's ok- it's not like I know how to make it act normally. The control panel the admins can access says it's normal, so...

My every post is going for moderator’s approval. Why?

ButterflyWoman
18th October 2012, 05:29 AM
Hmm. Weird. No idea why. There's nothing I can see in them that looks in any way suspicious. Sometimes the auto-screening can be a little strange, though, and it'll catch stuff for reasons we can't figure out. We'll keep an eye on it, and see if we can work out why. In the meantime, please be patient. :)

I have found that anyone who posts with links gets automatically moderated, even if they have been here a long time (which is why I try to check for 'moderated posts' on a daily basis) but on occasion the template may flag someone as suspicious for no apparent reason. I wonder if the number besides the name is making it think you're a spammer? It's really a mystery, and hopefully the program will finally get that you're not a spammer and let them go without the auto-moderation.

I am also having the same problem with my posts. Please check what’s the issue?

CFTraveler

The name, I think. Putting a number right besides the nic makes the template think you're a spammer. I'm not sure what to do about this, other than approving your posts as soon as I see them, which is what I try to do every day.

ButterflyWoman

I log in multiple times every day and check to see if any spam posts need to be deleted (we get at LOT of them; most go directly into moderated status, though, so users never see them) or if any legitimate posts got caught in the spam filter. It's generally only a matter of hours (sometimes minutes) before a mod logs in and checks these things. So, while it is pretty annoying to have your posts go into moderation (honestly, if there was a way to "whitelist" a user so they could post without being flagged, we'd do that, but there doesn't seem to be any function for that available), know that it won't be very long before it's approved.

Eventually, the filter will figure out you're okay and stop bugging you so much, I'm pretty sure (I'm assuming the filtering system is Bayesian). In the meantime, it's a good exercise in patience, and maybe faith. ;) :) :wacky1:

If it makes you feel better, there was one from Butterfly Woman that was moderated, and she's a moderator. The template's been on fire lately.

Could you look into the blogs too please, i wrote a new one yesterday, but i can only access it when i am on-line, & the little mod man figure is showing, so am guessing it's now waiting moderation too ?

Hello, dear moderators! could you please approve my blog entry? (and I also had a post I wrote in the affirmations thread that needs approval, probably because it contains 2 links).
Peace!

How do moderators see this moderated post or even threads?
Is there a site where you see all of them or do you only see them if you go the sertent thread or blog?

Many of my posts are lost in this way some of them to long to write again.

Just wanted to know how you see it cause then I know if I should tell you every time or not...

CFTraveler

When we look at the list of new posts, it has a little symbol next to it only we can see. It doesn't notify us or anything, we have to go see.
That's why sometimes we miss one or two from time to time.

I approved your blog posts. Normally, CFTraveler looks after the blogs, but I guess she's fallen behind a bit (she's had a lot of stuff going on in her life in the past few weeks). I'll duck in and check on the blogs, myself, though (I didn't realise she'd fallen behind). Sorry about the delay. I wish there was a way to auto-moderate the blogs, but there really isn't, unfortunately, and if we allow free posting, the spammers take over very quickly.

FWIW, the board moderates for spam much more efficiently, though it can be a little over excited at times (I just had to approve a couple of posts that were marked as spam for no reason that I could see).
