Are shamanic journeys the same thing as astral projection?

My understanding is that sometimes it's a projection and sometimes it's a vision.

Hank Wesselman, an anthropologist who also experiences the shamanic realms, writes about these things on his site if you're interested in knowing more http://www.sharedwisdom.com/

T (http://www.sharedwisdom.com/)here's also this site http://www.sacredhoop.org/ where you can download some free back issues of their magazine.

No.

Shamanic journeys (AKA vision questing) are visions. Visions are a space of symbolic representation where the essence of something is represented in familiar form. Beings appear as per their nature, not as the actual form.

Astral projection is travel to other (actual) dimensions. Objects you perceive are those objects. You see things more or less as they actually ‘are’ (in the same way the locals do).

Then what people are reporting as shamanic journeys are being misidentified in some cases.

This may help with a definition of what it is a shaman does:

I agree with BeeKeeper.

"Shamans are intermediaries or messengers between the human world and the spirit worlds. Shamans are said to treat ailments/illness by mending the soul. Alleviating traumas affecting the soul/spirit restores the physical body of the individual to balance and wholeness. The shaman also enters supernatural realms or dimensions to obtain solutions to problems afflicting the community. Shamans may visit other worlds/dimensions to bring guidance to misguided souls and to ameliorate illnesses of the human soul caused by foreign elements. The shaman operates primarily within the spiritual world, which in turn affects the human world. The restoration of balance results in the elimination of the ailment."http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shamanism
