Chiastolite is a mineral, a stone, a form of Andalusite. Some would call it a crystal. It's opaque, mostly brown, with a black cross shape in the middle if it's cut and polished properly. I have some earrings made with it, in fact.

It's got various metaphysical associations. It's known as "Fairy Cross" or "Cross Stone" sometimes (though I'm not sure why the "fairy" designation; it doesn't seem to have much to do with fairies). You can look up the supposed metaphysical properties for yourself (easy enough to do), but it does seem to have an association with energy and guarding against energy drain, and therefore is thought to be a protection stone.
