If all religions state that "They" have the truth and all the others don't, how do you work out which one to believe?

Believe? What's that?

Not all religions say that. Some are all about "many paths, same destination". So the question, itself, is based on a flawed premise because it makes an incorrect assumption.

And for the record, a "religion" tends to be extremely big and have a LOT of stuff in it. I doubt there are very many people on the whole planet who sincerely "believe" every scrap of their professed religion, especially when pretty much every religion has internal contradictions and factions and so forth. How could any human being believe all of that? Again, the question is deeply flawed.

But, I'm with CFT on this one. Let's define "believe".

i feel that religion is an ancient made made invention that might have served needs of that particular time but now to me is functionally useless as in serves no purpose - with that mentality the equation regarding "belief" changes .

Idk- the rise of communism (or rather, socialism; communism by it's own definition doesn't exist) shows that ideology is a form of religion- the institutionalization of any ideology creates a proto-religious system, with beliefs and all. So I think we still tend to create it, we just call it something else.

ideology is a form of religion
Of course it is. People who are strongly political have the same "religion" parts of their brain light up (plenty of neurological studies to show that). I can think of plenty of other ideologies that are not necessarily about god/s that look, feel, taste, smell, and sound EXACTLY like religion.

I like what Edgar Cayce said about god and the origins of the universe, but wont believe it until i can visit the Akashics for myself and confirm it.
