View Full Version : New Year's Eve/Day Rituals

31st December 2009, 08:53 PM
There are a few rituals 'my' people perform on new year's eve, and I thought I'd share them here (maybe later I'll move this to Mysticism). If you'd like to add yours please do.
Puerto Ricans will take a pail of water and bless the house as they clean, from back to front. Then after this, they move the pail full of water from the back to the front, and throw out the dirty (or symbolically dirty) water out the front. This is to get rid of negativity.

Cubans, when it's midnight (and some Puerto Ricans do also) will eat twelve grapes at the stroke of midnight. This is for good luck all twelve months.

Please share any of yours.

I forgot to add, my church does a 'burning bowl' ceremony (http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/401436/the_burning_bowl_ceremony_a_new_way.html) in which you write your problems (or whatever you don't want anymore) on flash paper and then apply them to a candle where they are burnt away. It's very cool, and we try to do it every year.

They got the Puerto Rico one half wrong. We do the noisemaking at 12 (that's what those blowy things are for) and fireworks- but the jumping in the ocean backwards is not done on New Year's Eve- it's done on St John's day, at midnight.
