The placebo effect is one of those things that make me smile- skeptics use it to 'explain away' therapies, but can't really explain why it works.

Sometimes I think it's the mere fact someone is paying attention to a person that makes them feel better.

There is also the other element of trying to please the authority figure that may account for why some people report feeling better, even if they don't.
