The Dweller on the Threshold

I have talked about this in the forums, but never in it's own theme, so here are some thoughts and ideas.
The Dweller on the Threshold is a reported
entity that one encounters when one is at the threshold of one state and has resolved to progress into the next state. It has been written about in Theosophy and other materials as a being or force that challenges you to your very core, with the understanding that defeating it moves you 'higher' in the path you have chosen. Some disciplines consider it an entity in its own right- a guardian of sorts, while others consider it a self-aspect or an amalgam of past lives, a 'shadow-self', created from those self aspects that have been pushed into the subconscious, which now rise up and get in your way- a way to deal with your unresolved crap- as psychology teaches us we need to do to handle our life.
There is another phenomenon which is hardly ever related to it, except by me and very few others, and that is of the Hag that sometimes accompanies sleep paralysis. This Hag seems to attack as you're paralyzed, and it has many explanations- a hypnopomp produced by your dreaming mind (still in REM), or the energetic explanation, also seen in the astral projection community- the energetic feedback from an expanded energy body that is returning but hasn't synchronized, or (in the rarer case of it happening at the threshold of projection) the guardian that tries to keep you from projecting. I have experienced all of the above, but feel that the hag phenomenon is the mechanism in which the self-aspect of the guardian uses to test your mettle.
How does it work? When your energy is expanded, and your body wakes up to a "stranger" in the bedroom, your lack of lucidity causes you to panic, and the panic feeds back to the expanded body, creating that which you fear- a dark shadow, a hooded figure, whatever. But the dweller mechanism takes hold and tests you to see if you can handle it, and if you do, you can then progress to the next stage of wherever you're at in your path.
