Kurt Leland describes in "Otherwhere" that dreams are a closed-off part of the astral, which prevents your unconscious creations to - let's say - pollute the landscape. When you get better at not unconsciously stumbling around and creating things out of your emotional turmoil you can go beyond the dream world and enter the afterlife dimension and meet real spirit beings.
