It was a complicated dream because it went from first person to third person to observer observing the third person. On top of that, it was not chronologically in order, but it went back and forth in time. At some points I was telling a story, I was living it or I was watching it.
So roughly:
My son and I were walking in the large hallways of a huge ship. I was telling him the story of how we got there. I was showing him at times (like on a holodeck) and I was remembering at times as I told him where some things (like soldering irons and chickens, for example) came from originally, and also where humans came from.
We had come from somewhere else from very far away, and out ship was gigantic and bustling with people. At first it was self-sufficient with ecosystems and food and technology to sustain us as we continued on. We had animals not just for subsistence but also as friends and companions, and I was showing him (holographically) what the place where the companion animals were, and there were pet chickens (the brown kind with the big red faces, they were quite gorgeous) and other animals like cats and dogs. I showed him when I used to solder things (technology) and I also showed him how certain things worked, and at some point I showed him that where we were now living (in the ship, still) was only a tiny fraction of the space, because throughout the eons some people had died, we had run out of enough fuel and were no longer self-sufficient, not enough people had learned what they needed to continue, and even though where we were seemed large enough, it was nothing compared to how it had once been.
After I awoke I had the feeling this was a 'before humanity' moment, and not the opposite.
