Looks like you became lucid while on your way back from an adventure. This has happened to me, too. The content of dream or AC is not consciously recalled, and the recall happens mostly on the way home (= down). This could also be why - inspite of your lucidity - you could not prolong this or trigger another experience. The birds could represent the arrival back down on the physical plane - on the ground.
